What's that smell?

Warning: Don't install DDR2 RAM onto a DDR motherboard. If you do you may notice a horrible popping sound followed by a dirty smoky smell. As a result you may have to replace your power supply. Or your power supply and ram. Or your power supply, ram and motherboard. I guess I'll know which one for sure once I get home from work and have a closer look.

What a bugger, I only just finished paying it off too!!

"OK," The PFY says looking over the inside of The Boss's machine. "I'll take a quick look at it, but at this stage I'm fairly certain that it'll just need a new seal and a smoke recharge and be back up and running in no time."

"Sorry, did you say smoke recharge?"

"Yeah?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, obviously the smoke seal's gone which is why you saw it. If we replace the seal and recharge the smoke it'll probably be as good as new."

Quite right, it's the motherboard. Little chip next to the power supply socket and RAM slots had started to bubble and let out its smoke. No matter, I had wanted to get rid of that motherboard anyway - ordered an ASUS AN8-E last night, and 2GB Corsair RAM
